It's never too late to start Myofunctional Therapy
It's never too late to start Myofunctional Therapy
Everyone has heard of physical therapy, but have you ever heard of myofunctional therapy? It is essentially therapy exercises for your mouth, face, jaws, and tongue. A majority of the population has low resting tongue postures without even knowing it. This creates breathing problems, malocclusion of their teeth, and muscle tension in their head, neck, and shoulders.
By having a low tongue posture, you are taking support away from your facial structures. Your tongue is meant to rest on the roof of your mouth which will help support your jaw and cause you to breathe through your nose. If your tongue is on the bottom of your mouth then it is much more likely that you are breathing through your mouth. This is caused by poor muscle tone, learned habits, or physically there is not enough space due to craniofacial development.
Myofunctional therapy is all about opening the airway and training your muscles to keep the airway open. There are four goals that we will work on during therapy that addresses airway-related health conditions and symptoms.
All ages are welcome and encouraged to do myofunctional therapy if there are myofunctional concerns. When younger patients do therapy we are working on preventing problems that will develop later in life. When treating adults we are not doing therapy for cosmetic reasons, we are treating and preventing underlying health concerns that develop from oral myofunctional disorders. No matter what your age is, everyone's goal is to feel better and be healthier. It is always worthwhile to take care of your health as best as you can. By doing therapy you will be on track to make life-changing progress. Treatment for all ages consists of just five minutes twice daily to see amazing results!
Have you ever woken yourself up due to snoring? Or had a partner wake you up to tell you to roll over? Mouth breathing and snoring go hand in hand. By doing myofunctional therapy exercises during the day you will strengthen your facial and oral muscles. This will help change your habits and teach you how to breathe through your nose. It has been shown that by doing therapy, patients with sleep-disordered breathing (sleep apnea and UARS) have seen improvements.

I started Modern Myo to bridge the gap between medical and dental professionals to help patients on their journey to improve their facial balance and overall health.
Working as a dental hygienist for many years, I have had the opportunity to be a part of oral healthcare for countless patients. During this time, I began to see consistent concerns and issues arise with oral health that the dental and medical world professionals did not have great answers for.
I was ready to start making a more significant impact with my patients, focusing on the root cause of their concerns. I have always been fascinated by the "why" of what we see in practice. Why do we develop the way we do? Why do some children need orthodontic care and others do not? Why do we clench and grind our teeth? Why do some people have sleep apnea and others don't? In my search for more answers, I discovered myofunctional therapy, which seeks to holistically treat the underlying cause of many disorders we see in children and adults today.
I have since become very passionate about helping people in this new adjunctive way as an orofacial myofunctional therapist. I am dedicated to helping bridge communication between medical and dental healthcare providers, working together to provide the best possible customized care for each patient I have the privilege to work with.
